The Padma is a major river in Bangladesh, the eastern distributary of the Ganges, flowing southeast for 356 km to its confluence with the Meghna River near the Bay of Bengal. The city of Rajshahi lies on its banks. Since 1966, over 66,000 hectares have been lost to erosion. Observations suggest the Ganges once flowed through what is now lakes and marshes between Nattore and Jaffiergunge, possibly merging with the Burrampooter or Meghna near Fringybazar, creating the current bed of the Meghna.
